Curious about the process of translation, I did some research and happened across a wordreference.com discussion board where the Turkish translator of <a title=\"Just a Couple of Days\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/just-a-couple-of-days.php\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Just a Couple of Days<\/em><\/a> was inquiring if anyone could explain what \u201cwise-assed\u201d specifically meant. Thence ensued a lively discussion with contributors from the US, France, Turkey, Germany, Ireland, and Israel attempting to draw distinctions between a wise-ass, a smart-ass, a smart-aleck, a wise-guy, as well as a klugschitter (a German word whose literal English translation is wise-shitter), which of course led to a spirited debate as to the proper distinction between the verb forms of shit and bullshit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Not long after, I received an e-mail from the <a title=\"Just a Couple of Days in Italian\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.it\/giorni-alla-fine-Tony-Vigorito\/dp\/8878991945\" target=\"_blank\">Italian<\/a> translator of <a title=\"Just a Couple of Days\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/just-a-couple-of-days.php\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Just a Couple of Days<\/em><\/a>, who was in a state of puzzlement over how to translate certain sections. My sympathies were with her, for as some of you know, there are passages in <a title=\"Just a Couple of Days\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/just-a-couple-of-days.php\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Just a Couple of Days<\/em><\/a> so thick with puns, similes, allegories, allusions, metaphors, and nonsensical non sequiturs that they have inspired a seething hatred of my presence on this planet from a vocal few, and this from native speakers of English. I cannot imagine the task of translating such wordplay. The <a title=\"Just a Couple of Days in Italian\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.it\/giorni-alla-fine-Tony-Vigorito\/dp\/8878991945\" target=\"_blank\">Italian<\/a> translator writes:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1Op1eNg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-138 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JCD-Spanish.jpg\" alt=\"Adventures in the Shadow of Babel\" width=\"300\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JCD-Spanish.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JCD-Spanish-192x300.jpg 192w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The <em>Billet-doux<\/em> at pp. 198-9 is the most obscure for me. Could you explain what it is exactly about?<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><strong>Rosehips: We really must hand it to ourselves. We quibble and we quoth, and quack as much as quick, but quiver do we niver a cold and lonesome shiver.<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>Sweetlick: Fe fi fo fum, enough of this enterprising ho hum. Yo ho ho and a bottle of pennies. Money is our shortage, loans, bills, and mortgage\u2026<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure I was much help in my reply. I can only pray that Saint Peter won\u2019t read those words, else I\u2019ll find myself at the gates of heaven one day staring down his accusing index finger as he bounces a tattered copy of <a title=\"Just a Couple of Days\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/just-a-couple-of-days.php\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Just a Couple of Days<\/em><\/a> off my head and thunders, \u201cWhat the christ is the meaning of this horseshit?\u201d and I\u2019m forced to kick at the clouds beneath my feet and stammer that I really have no idea.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, I was able to assist with the translator\u2019s other earnest perplexities. In a way, it reminded me of what <a title=\"Just a Couple of Days\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/just-a-couple-of-days.php\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Just a Couple of Days<\/em><\/a> was all about in the first place: How much we take for granted when we use language\u2014what is known as the<em> etcetera principle <\/em>in social psychology. Every word is deeply embedded in a cultural context so all-encompassing that we forget it even exists, and it\u2019s not until we\u2019re forced to explain what we exactly mean that its existence becomes apparent. For the sake of posterity, and for the sake of an adventure in the shadow of Babel, I\u2019ve included some of her questions below, along with my tormented replies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/opus.co.il\/product_info.php?products_id=636\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-135 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JCD-Hebrew.jpg\" alt=\"Adventures in the Shadow of Babel\" width=\"300\" height=\"446\" \/><\/a>Doom is on the loom?&#8230;<\/em> What is the meaning?<\/strong><br \/>\nTragedy is looming.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Shiver me timbers<\/em>&#8230; Is it a Tom Waits\u2019 song?<\/strong><br \/>\nI don\u2019t know the Tom Waits song, but I intended it as a reference to pirates, \u201cshiver me timbers\u201d being an alleged expletive of pirates.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Tofu! Tofu!<\/em> and <em>MOMMEEEEEE!<\/em>&#8230; The inmates shout these words. Can you explain?<\/strong><br \/>\nTofu is a soybean-based protein food. It\u2019s intended to be utter nonsense without sensible context. As for <em>MOMMEEEEEE!<\/em>, they\u2019re terrified and shouting \u201cMommy!\u201d, as in a derivate of \u201cmother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Gotten a pick-up game of co-ed naked Red Rover going with the nuns next door<\/em>&#8230; Could you explain to me what is Red Rover?<\/strong><br \/>\nRed Rover is a childhood game in which two opposing lines face one another with hands clasped and call individuals from the other line to try to run and break through their hands. It\u2019s fun.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Hands now flirting with his fiddle like the devil down in Georgia<\/em>&#8230; Is it an idiom? Otherwise I don\u2019t know anything about a Georgian devil.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>The Devil Went Down to Georgia<\/em> is a popular song by the Charlie Daniels Band in which the devil challenges a fiddler to a fiddle-playing contest down in the U.S. state of Georgia. I don&#8217;t know anything about a Georgian devil, either.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1SvEkEs\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-152 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JCD-Polish.jpg\" alt=\"Adventures in the Shadow of Babel\" width=\"300\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JCD-Polish.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JCD-Polish-213x300.jpg 213w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Propriety shmo-priety&#8230;<\/em> What does it mean?<\/strong><br \/>\nShm- is a prefix of mockery or dismissal, possibly of Yiddish orgin (e.g., shmuck), as in money shmoney, dance shmance, or propriety shmo-priety.\u00a0 In any event, the meaning is \u201cpropriety be damned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Whom he called \u201cli\u2019l pumpkin\u201d<\/em>&#8230; What does li\u2019l mean?<\/strong><br \/>\nLi\u2019l is a contraction of little.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>He settled for wagging his whippersnapper<\/em>&#8230; Whippersnapper = penis?<\/strong><br \/>\nRegrettably, yes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>I\u2019d rather you jack yourself off than off yourself Jack<\/em>&#8230; jack oneself = masturbate; off Jack = cut off one\u2019s penis?\u00a0 Who would cut it? Flake to himself?<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cOff yourself\u201d means to kill yourself, and Kiljoy is only calling Flake \u201cJack\u201d for the word reversal.\u00a0 Essentially he\u2019s saying \u201cI\u2019d rather you masturbate than commit suicide. To be clear, there is no genital mutilation in this passage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>And began twirling his tamale<\/em>&#8230; Tamale = penis?<\/strong><br \/>\nOnce again, regrettably, yes. Kiljoy plays with his privates a lot, and every time the narrator observes this he uses a different euphemism. I was young when I wrote this.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1Op1Keb\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-139 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JCD-Turkish.jpg\" alt=\"Adventures in the Shadow of Babel\" width=\"300\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JCD-Turkish.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JCD-Turkish-192x300.jpg 192w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Pleased as a peach in fourth grad, or a plum in fifth<\/em>\u2026 Could you explain it, please?<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is an allusion to a grade school rhyme in some regions of the U.S. that goes: Kindergarten babies, first grade snots, second grade angels, third grade pots, fourth grade peaches, fifth grade plums, and all the rest are dirty bums.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Miss Mary may well have shaken herself to death<\/em>&#8230; Does it mean that Miss Mary is frightened?<\/strong><br \/>\nMiss Mary was addicted to cigarettes, and people in nicotine withdrawal get \u201cthe shakes,\u201d uncontrolled nervousness and jitteriness. \u201cShaken herself to death\u201d is hyperbole.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>And so the shit riseth, and life is crappy<\/em>&#8230; riseth = rises?<\/strong><br \/>\nIndeed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>They ran for it<\/em>&#8230; What do they run for, exactly?<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cRun for it\u201d is an idiom, to depart as fast as possible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Brahmic brap<\/em>&#8230; Brahmic = family of scripts? Brap = loud noise of an engine or an onomatopoeic word for burp?<\/strong><br \/>\nBrahmic refers to the highest form of consciousness in Hinduism. And yes, brap is an onomatopoeic word for burp.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Jujis and jubas<\/em>&#8230; What does it mean?<\/strong><br \/>\nThis passage is an ascent (or descent) into celebratory gibberish. It has no specific meaning other than its rhythm and rhyme to the words around it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.it\/giorni-alla-fine-Tony-Vigorito\/dp\/8878991945\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-136 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JCD-Italian.jpg\" alt=\"Adventures in the Shadow of Babel\" width=\"300\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JCD-Italian.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.tonyvigorito.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/JCD-Italian-204x300.jpg 204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>So there you have it. Relying on so much etcetera behind every single word, it\u2019s really a wonder we can communicate at all, even in the same language. If you don\u2019t believe me, the next time you\u2019re talking with a friend, try asking, \u201cwhat do you mean?\u201d in response to everything they say. You can hardly do this four times without pissing them off something dangerous.
